Ruthanna Young and Kareem-Nelson Hull of Miami, Florida, were engaged on July 24, 2009.
The bride-to-be has a Bachelor's degree in entrepreneurship and is a hedge fund administrator. She is the daughter of Peter Young and Wilma Jane Ebanks.
The groom-to-be has a Master's degree in international relations and is a communications professional. He is the son of Nelson and Coreen Hull.
The couple met in the fall of 2004.
Kareem-Nelson says, "We were both students at the University of Miami and both on the executive board for the Caribbean Students Association. We were also students in the same class. We were completely platonic until we had to work closely together to pull off a pageant with several elements that were missing with time running out. We (mostly Kareem-Nelson) worked through the night to complete the pageant booklet while Ruthanna slept. I kept looking at her while we worked and with each look I feel deeper in "like." After the pageant, I asked another executive board member how I should approach her, not knowing he was her immediate past boyfriend. He told me to just tell her I liked her. I did, in my way, which was with a bouquet of flowers set in a martini glass delivered to her house the next morning. I formally asked her to be my girlfriend on April 15, 2005."
Kareem-Nelson's engagement story: "I proposed to Ruthanna in her father's backyard after writing him and receiving written permission to have his daughter's hand in marriage. Her aunt, cousin, mother, father, stepmother, friends and I arranged an elaborate backyard engagement complete with aisle runners flanked with candles and flowers to surprise her. In fact, my flying to her native Cayman Islands was a surprise to her, as were the song that I sang (This I Promise You) as I walked her to a throne decorated in purple (her favorite color), the back-up singers that accompanied me, the camera crew that greeted her in the kitchen and all of her family and friends that showed up wearing all white to witness the proposal. An engagement reception was held immediately following her saying, "of course" and threatening to kill everyone that knew it was coming and didn't tell her."
