It sounds tempting….a bridesmaid has volunteered to do your makeup on the wedding day. Her makeup always looks beautiful, it certainly is convenient; and how lovely to save those funds and apply them to the venetian dessert bar you're thinking about! Should you forgo the professional makeup artist in favor of the maid? Unless your bridesmaid is actually a makeup artist, I would advise against it. Even if she is a professional, it may not be the best decision:
Your bridesmaids may be more stressed than you are on the wedding day. Many times, instead of having a calming, organized makeup artist who is a pro, the bridesmaid may add to the confusion and create disorganization and nervous energy. She may run late, get sick, have issues with other maids or be attending to other unexpected wedding duties. Not a good tone for the start of your wedding day.
Although she may do an artful job with her own makeup, your maid may not have an understanding of your wedding day tastes. She may not give you the look that you desire or one that will work best for you. Just as you had to try on a few gowns before grasping what styles look best for your body-type, certain colors and “looks” will compliment you. Some may not. Your bridesmaid may not have developed the keen eye or understanding of subtle differences in shades and tones which can make or break your look. She might not know the techniques involving blending and customizing colors to match skin tones and even out your complexion.
Seldom will a professional makeup artist simply grab a bottle of base. Typically a bride’s skin has undertones that need to be taken into consideration; as well as undertones of the colors in her gown, flowers and bridesmaids’ dresses. All of these have an effect on how the makeup is interpreted in photos. Your bridesmaid may not have an understanding of makeup for both natural and indoor lighting. When you look in the mirror, you may see having a rosy glow. However, the pictures in your wedding album could reveal glaring blush that detracts from how beautiful your makeup actually was.
You’ve invested in your gown, your tiara, your jewelry, your shoes, your flowers, etc. Doesn’t it make sense to spend a bit more to ensure the job is done correctly? Professional makeup artists are well-versed in photographic makeup and see the whole image. They take the unknowns out of the equation. Remember, wedding photographs and albums are yours for a lifetime.
