Joanne McDermid and Edward Offenbach

For Joanne McDermid and Edward Offenbach, the essence of love is surprise.

After two years of dating, the couple planned a Christmas trip to Joanne’s hometown of Toronto. Edward insisted on booking the flights. Joanne didn’t know it at the time, but he was sneaking in a stop to New York City.

At the end of their three-day adventure, Edward had something else up his sleeve—a visit to The Rink at Rockefeller Center.  “He had a little map,” Joanne recalls, laughing. “He was so organized. I didn’t know where we were going.”

Joanne and Edward bypassed the rink’s long waiting lines and arrived to steaming mugs of hot chocolate. “They knew us by name and had skates out in my size all ready to get on the ice,” she says. It was there on the ice that Edward got down on one knee and proposed.

For their wedding, the couple aimed to create an intimate and elegant atmosphere. It was important to Joanne to use outdoor space and keep the mood relaxed, inviting and warm.
