Honeymoon Hot Spot: Ladder Ranch, New Mexico

Far-flung honeymoons are exciting, and going on one can feel like a poignant start to a new life with your bride or groom. But you don’t have to travel to the far reaches of the globe to have the experience of a lifetime. Ladder Ranch, which is located in Caballo, New Mexico, and owned by media mogul and conservationist Ted Turner, is one unique honeymoon spot we love for its relaxing setting, breathtaking scenery (below), authentic accommodations, and outdoor adventures.

Honeymooners who choose Ladder Ranch can consider themselves pioneers of sorts: In September, Turner opened the private ranch for eco-tours and made his own personal home and bunkhouse there available for rentals through his new eco-tourism company, Ted Turner Expeditions. This marks not only the first time that travelers have been granted access to Turner’s breathtaking, 156,000-acre ranch in the 23 years that he’s owned it, but also their first opportunity to sleep, dine, and relax in the cozy ranch house that, until its opening this year, only Turner and his family had enjoyed.

A stay in Turner’s home on Ladder Ranch will set you back $6,000 per night, but that rate will get you a private chef for the duration of your stay (breakfast, dinner, and boxed gourmet lunches to take out on your daily adventures), private guides for half- and full-day adventures on the ranch, and a house manager who’ll see to it that you have all the provisions you need and that all of your preferences are met. (Extra blankets on the beds? A supply of your favorite DVDs? A bottle of bubbly to help you celebrate? Just ask.)

The ranch house’s main floor has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and is outfitted with polished wood floors, soft-as-silk animal-skin rugs, an oversize stone fireplace, buttery leather furniture, a wide front porch with rocking chairs and mountain views, and a rear patio with a fire pit—the perfect spot for stargazing and after-dinner s’mores.

Turner’s spacious master bedroom is filled with natural light and features beautiful, scenic views.

When you’re not drinking in the views or lingering over three-course meals and delicious New Mexico wine with your new Mr. or Mrs., you’ll set out onto the ranch with a guide in an all-terrain vehicle to tour its various eco-systems, which range from high desert, to rock caves, to lush, river-fed woods. Heart-pounding hikes will take you over grassy hillsides and through cool, shallow streams, and, depending on when you visit, you’ll encounter wildlife, including Turner’s famously beloved bison, as well as elk, deer, antelope, bears, dozens of types of birds, and mountain lions.

If you’re tempted to venture away from Ladder Ranch, arrange a day or evening outing to the town of Truth or Consequences, less than 20 miles away, for a spa treatment and a soak in an indoor or outdoor natural hot spring at Sierra Grande Lodge & Spa. The town, known as T or C by locals, is quiet, but its storied past, colorful buildings, and friendly shopkeepers make it a great spot for some light exploring, shopping, and picture taking. It’s a place—and an adventure—you’ll never forget.
