Hotel Guanahani & Spa, St. Barths

There’s truth to the hype surrounding St. Barths, the celeb-studded, sun-drenched sliver of French West Indies often dubbed the St. Tropez of the Caribbean. But there’s more to this petite, eight-square-mile island than socializing, posing and people watching; it’s also an idyllic locale for an intimate, five-star honeymoon.

Secluded from the pulse of St. Barth’s see-and-be-seen hotspots, Hotel Guanahani & Spa St. Barths spans an entire micro-peninsula at the convergence of azure Marigot Bay and emerald Grand Cul de Sac. The island’s sole full-service resort, Hotel Guanahani—a name derived from the Arawak word for “welcome”—comprises a series of colorful, classic Creole cottages commencing at the waterfront and tiered along the hillside.

Each room is decked out in tropical panache as envisioned by interior designer Luis Pons, who included such details as four-poster beds, vintage luggage trunks, dark-wood cabinetry embellished with woven straw, minimalist sea-inspired art and neocolonial furnishings.

While all cottages open to expansive terraces facing lush bougainvillea gardens or ocean blues, the pool suites also house personal, lounger-lined swimming pools and alfresco dining areas, both tucked into the native foliage for maximum privacy. Furthermore, eight singular villas, collectively called the Prestige Suites, compose the resort’s most esteemed inventory. The new Admiral Suite, with wraparound balconies above Grand Cul de Sac lagoon and direct access to a private beach, is a 1,400-square-foot, nautical-themed ocean home dedicated to explorer Christopher Columbus.

At ground level, Hotel Guanahani & Spa St. Barths teems with endless opportunity for fun in the sun. Explore the placid waters with complimentary canoes, kayaks, paddleboats and windsurfing and snorkeling gear. Sun worship throughout the day, alternating between your private veranda, the principal beachfront swimming pool and the chaise lounges dotting the sparkling coastline.

Rise and shine to a gourmet French breakfast on the beach at Indigo Restaurant (included in your stay) and then toast to the good life at the Beach Bar, indulging in one of the specialty cocktails or the island-wide drink of choice: Champagne.  (800-216-3774,
