The week of Pooja Desai’s twenty-seventh birthday, she came home to her New York apartment one night to find a sign that read, “Don’t go past this way.”
It was the start of a scavenger hunt, set up by her boyfriend, Mitu Shah, in which Pooja was given clues to find small gifts, like her favorite magazine and candy bar, hidden in her apartment, each with a clue to another gift.
Eventually, one of the clues instructed her to meet Mitu at their favorite bar, where they had drinks before going to dinner. Along the way, Pooja received roses and clues to more gifts–from the doorman, the bartender, the server–before they walked to Bryant Park, where a friend was having a birthday party.
At that point, Mitu asked Pooja to count the number of gifts she had received. She counted 26.
“For your twenty-seventh gift, you have to turn around,” he told her.
When Pooja turned around, she saw by the park’s fountain candles that had been arranged to spell, “Will you marry me?” Pooja turned back to Mitu, and he was on bended knee with a ring. Pooja was further surprised to discover that the birthday party for their friend was actually an engagement party for her and Mitu.
The thought-out proposal was just the start of the kind of well-planned celebration Pooja and Mitu would have to commemorate their marriage. The couple held a three-day destination wedding extravaganza in Miami Beach, blending their fresh, contemporary taste with Indian traditions.
