John Dietzler and Brittany Pillard’s first meeting, which came in September 2009, was anything but romantic. “John had just moved to Omaha to attend law school and ended up moving into a house on the same street as me,” says Brittany. “I was driving around the corner a bit too fast and nearly ran into him with my car!” Later on, at law school orientation, the two recognized one another from their near run-in. Despite their too-close encounter, the pair struck up a friendship. Eventually, sparks flew, and the friendship became a romance—Brittany and John began dating in January 2012, and a year and a half later, in October 2013, John asked Brittany to be his bride.

The couple, who now live in Denver, became Mr. and Mrs. at Saint Ann Catholic Church in West Palm Beach on February 7, 2015, with 200 guests looking on. When it came to choosing a location for their wedding, Brittany remembered The Breakers, where she’d vacationed with her parents as a little girl. “One day, my mother and I were looking over a balcony and watched a bride walk down the aisle and get married overlooking the ocean. I told my mother that princesses must get married at The Breakers and that one day I hoped to have my wedding there. When John proposed, it was the first venue we considered.”

For their wedding, Brittany and John favored classic style. “We both wanted a wedding we could look back on someday and still think was beautiful,” she says. To bring the timeless look and romantic vibe to life, they brought in antiques, such as old clocks and vintage books. “I wanted our guests to feel as if they walked into a fairytale storybook.”

As a decorative touch to be incorporated into the couple’s cocktail party, The Breakers’ Design Studio team created a wall of vintage love story books, which stood behind the couple’s place card table. Guests’ seating information was printed onto bookmark place cards to carry on the love story theme. “Later, the wall of vintage books was moved to become the backdrop for our photo booth,” Brittany says. “Seeing it in all of our guests’ photos was so special and memorable.”
