This week’s question: “I’ve been addressing my future in-laws by their first names. Once we’re married, do I call them ‘mom and dad’?”
Some in-laws prefer being called mom and dad right after the wedding (or even the engagement!), while others deem the title appropriate only for one’ s actual parents. Some don’t care, either way.
Of course, you may also find that you aren’t ready or don’t wish to address your in-laws so intimately. Many newlyweds need time to adjust to their new life and to their extended family.
Speak to your spouse about his or her parents’ expectations and spell out your own preferences. Whatever the options—first names or family monikers—the decision, ultimately, is yours.
